The site for A-House is located within a typical gridded urban neighbourhood at the corner intersection of two internal roads. The brief from the client was for us to create a "multi-level" experience throughout the villa whilst maintaining an "open" feel from within. Our response to the client's requirements was to create a split level plan divided into five floors although the total height complies with the government requirements. The central staircase permeates throughout the floors and circumambulates around a glazed courtyard open to the sky. The service blocks, maid quarters and kitchens have all been placed in the lower levels while the living spaces are place on the ground floors.
The rooms for the family members have all been placed on the top floors. The first floor itself is also comprised of a double story living room encasing the study room which half protrudes within the space. The façade of the building also reflects the "multi-level" requirement through interlacing and cantilevered concrete forms that protrude into the building free standing masses and permeate out of them thereby anchoring the overall arrangement of the volumes into a distinctive yet cohesive whole. Natural colours commonly used within the emirate have been utilized such as whites and beiges as well as natural materials such limestone and wooden louvers.
